Saving up PTO, hoping the schedule lined up, hoping nothing went wrong. My daughter got RSV two weeks into daycare. You don't get to save PTO for December when life doesn't cooperate with a calendar. ## It Was Never Really About Christmas For a while, I thought the goal was just protecting the holidays. Save enough time off, plan far enough ahead, and maybe I could always be home for the moments that mattered most. But that's such a small version of what I actually wanted. I didn't want time freedom for two weeks in December. I wanted it for the whole year. Every holiday, even the ones nobody observes. Every ordinary Tuesday. I didn't want to keep waking up, rushing out the door, listening to her cry as I dropped her off, and spending my whole day away from her when it wasn't what either of us wanted. Why does being home with your own child have to feel like a luxury? Every time I get to be home with my daughter now, it's because I chose to sacrifice for it, not because life happened to line up in my favor. If you genuinely want to stay home with your children, luck isn't the thing standing between you and that life. A plan is. This is where an online business would have changed everything for me, if I'd known about it while I still had my job. I didn't. I got laid off, and that decision was made for me, not by me.
